Artemis Fowl, By: Eoin Colfer

May 4th, 2009 by 15macleoda

This book is very interesting and it will capture your imagination no matter what your age is, if you like mythical creatures a evil masterminds this is the perfect book for you. When I picked this book up i could not stop reading it. This is the first book in the series of Artemis Fowl. This story’s complication is intriguing, the Fowls are going through a rough patch in their family life, Artemis’s father has been kidnapped by rival mafia gangs and Artemis’s mother Angeline is living off sleeping pills in the attic mourning her alleged dead husband. There are several main characters in this book including Artemis himself,  Domovoi Butler Artemis’s bodyguard, Holly Short Artemis’s elf captive and Artemis Fowl I Artemis’s kidnapped father. Kidnapping fairies becomes something like a hobby to Artemis, with no “man-of-the-house” to get food on the table Artemis had to take charge and started to retain billionaire status to the Fowls after they lost theirs trying to pay a false ransom for Artemis’s father. Eoin Colfer has used a variety of styles in order to make his work unique, and he has done a great job on it. He uses short sentences to highlight moments of suspense, terror or pain. Personally I think this book is great but I think you would have to be into this sort of genre to really get into it. I would recommend this book to Eric Standar because from reading his blog I understand he would like it.

The Diary Of Anne Frank: Book Review

April 22nd, 2009 by 15macleoda

Anne Frank’s diary is a very captivating book, it shows the inside truth about WWII and the sad tale about the killing of innocent Jewish citizens in Holland. Her diary is intriguing in many different ways including the personality of Anne. People during the 1940’s might have dressed and looked differently but the way we speak and our use of slang is similar to the style of language spoken during the 40’s. Anne uses very sophisticated language for her age and would have grown up to be a great novelist, writer or journalist. Most of her diary entries are about life in the “Secret Annexe”. I think her diary gives her a chance to reflect and unwind at the end of the day and think about her past life.

I wouldn’t say Anne Frank’s diary is an engrossing book but it does have a great view of political and historical views of the Nazi party and their genocide killings. This tragic story would make you mourn the death of the Franks and the innocent Jewish people caught up in the middle of the war. The Nazis committed a terrible crime all based on religion, Anne explains the in precise form using a wide vocabulary. By the end of the book Anne has drawn a mind map of the Annexe in your head and describes things in incredible detail and expression in order to show the reader about the confusing, difficult and scary life of Anne Frank, Thank-you, Anne Frank

This website shows different main points of a comic strip.  It is good because it shows what the key points are, and the structure of a comic.  It is good because it explain what they mean and how you use them. It tells about conflict, characters, setting and much more. It also shows pictures to explain what it is and it uses easy language. It can also be used for writing paragraphs for only a keyword.

What is My Fantasy Factory

January 18th, 2009 by 15macleoda

Ok. My fantasy factory would have to be something I am very passionate about, perhaps music. I would have to say my favorite factory would have to print music for many musicians young or old to play or to practice.

I would love the joy the factory would bring to people. I feel very strongly for Music and I think it should be something everyone could have. but most importantly I think the best gift of all in learning an instrument

and being able to read music.

Part of the reason I chose to make a factory that would print millions of sheets of music, is because my music teacher once told me that music had to be printed by hand, This process was expensive slow and the more notes on the music the higher the cost. Now you can do this by computer quick and cheap. But my one hope this factory will achieve considering it would ever be made is that many children will be interested in music for generations to come.

The factory would be like sanctuary filled with rhythms, chords and beats with music of any type from Rock to Classical Music.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by: Brian Selznick

January 12th, 2009 by 15macleoda

This is perhaps one of the best books I have ever read, not only because of the story but because of the amazing charcoal and pencil illustrations within it. This book has won the most distinguished American picture book award for children, otherwise known as the Caldecott Medal. Brian Selznick has illustrated all the pictures in his book by himself. Brian Selznick has illustrated many other books, one of them being Frindle’ which has won many awards including the Christopher award.

This outstanding book is about young boy named Hugo Cabret. Hugo lives in a small train station, Hugo lives behind the clocks of the train station that he winds up every day and night. Hugo does have a father in this book but sadly he dies in a dreadful fire in the museum workshop where he fixes broken clockwork and machinery. Not long before Hugo’s father died he was fixing an old magicians ‘Automaton’, which becomes a major part of the story. This book contains many twists and very many characters.

The setting of the book is in France around the early 19th century, I found this out by taking a picture from the book and tracing back from the time it was made. The film was new at the time the book is based. I have never read any of Brian Selznick’s work but his job title is illustrator but he could be both an Author and an Illustrator with work like this. I also found that he included real people in this book and just slightly changed a few things about their career. for example he includes the director of ‘Le Voyage dans la Lune’ Georges Méliès as a character. Brian Selznick includes the culture of France at that time, by doing this it makes the story easier to understand as well as some 19th century French history. My favorite part about this book is that it gives you an ability to read the characters feelings precisley. But I think the highlight of this book has to be the art work included in it. I have never before seen art like this in such a novel.  If you like mystery, history, and machinery you’ll love this book.  On first appearance it seems like a big book to read with 533 pages including 284 pages of original drawings.  This book should be on all school reading lists, it is by far my favorite book.

Class Display Reflection

November 19th, 2008 by 15macleoda

Recently in class we made a display on the world famous author Roald Dahl. Within the class we came up with a few groups, I was in the biography group. Although I was sick on the the last day of doing it in class I e-mailed my friend Nick 10 facts about Roald Dahl to put on the display. The topic for the display was ‘What makes Roald Dahl a good writer.’

Personally I wish I could have been more involved I was sick on the most important day of the display.
I only wish I was there on the last day of working on it in class. Overall the class didn’t work that badly all together there were a few organization hiccups but apart from that it was all good. me as an individual I felt this task was quite difficult and confusing, I was put to the task of doing a biography but I thought “What does that have to do with him being a good…no scratch that great writer.” Well I never really figured that out but then again those were the instructions given to us.
But this was a fun and exciting task and I hope we will do it again some time!

Battle Of The Trips

November 4th, 2008 by 15macleoda

Personally I think field trips are incredibly important. It is a great chance to mingle and learn more about your friends and let relationships grow. Field studies are great for learning and seeing different types of Geography within the country you are living and learning in. It’s quite hard to imagine not liking field studies, so many different things to learn that don’t have anything to do with school. So my answer is surely a big fat YES! But still field studies has a few bad things for example like being homesick but other than that yes.
